E’Ville City Council Approves Development Agreement For Apartment Building Project; Approves Citywide Cleanup Days

(Estherville)– The proposed construction of a new 64 unit apartment complex in Estherville has cleared another hurdle. The city council Monday evening approved a development agreement between the city and Deer Creek of Estherville. It spells out who’s responsible for installing certain types of infrastructure to the site. The city’s portion of the cost is not to exceed $350,000. A representative with Eagle Construction of Sioux Falls, the project developer, thanked the council for their support of the project…E’Ville Council 031501 

“It’s getting tougher and tougher to develop multi family housing with rents that are competitive in a market like Estherville, and we just have to get creative in any way possible, and that usually ends up working out when we get participation from the city and the state and us as well. We’re able to bend a little bit and make a project like this work.”

City Administrator Penny Clayton added the project has been cited as a vital need for Estherville…E’Ville Council 031502 

“This was another one of those items that the Rural Housing Readiness Assessment group was pretty excited about. Just providing another alternative for folks that are trying to locate in town and not finding the housing they’re looking for.”

The project has a completion deadline of May, 2022.

In other business, the Estherville City Council approved holding citywide cleanup days June 21st-25th, dependent upon which part of town a person lives and the day their garbage is picked up. Clayton says this is the first time in five years the city of Estherville will be holding cleanup days…E’Ville Council 031503 

“We had some challenges at least in the later years with abuse of the citywide cleanup process and so it was discontinued, for lack of a better word. As part of the Rural Housing Readiness Assessment that we went through we heard over and over again that we need to clean up our community and one of the ways that the committee recommended that we try to do that is by having a citywide cleanup.”

Residents will still be required to purchase tags to dispose of old appliances and electronic items. Hazardous materials will not be accepted.
