(Milford)-It’s Respect Week at Okoboji Schools, part of the Unified Champion School program.
Student Laci Hilpipre explains that it’s all about inclusion of all students in the schools:
“The Okoboji Schools are going to be celebrating Respect Week, March 1-5. We are proud to be a Unified Champion School. This means that the Special Olympics Iowa partners with schools throughout Iowa to unite students with and without disabilities for fun and friendship. All of our students develop knowledge, acceptance and respect for one another when involved in these activities and classes.”
She adds that various events are planned throughout the week:
“Friday we actually started decorating our halls, and we have this really cool sign. We had our Art Society kids help us out, that way we included them. But, we cut out the letters for ‘KIND’, and then we put the ‘I’ in a different color from the rest and one of our things is going to be to make a hashtag and have kids stand in front of the ‘I” and really represent the ‘I’ in kind. Then we’re also going to have a school live poster signing day for Respect Week through Special Olympics, and we’re just going to make sure to wear our colors to really support these kids.”
