(Spirit Lake)– There was an upset Tuesday in the Dickinson County Treasurer’s race.
Challenger Kris Rowley narrowly defeated long-time incumbent Linda Voss. According to unofficial results, Rowley had 3,524 votes while Voss had 3,361…a difference of only 163 votes.
In the race for third district State Senate, Republican incumbent David Johnson fended off a challenge from Democrat Mel Berryhill of Milford. Unofficial results had Johnson with 12,312 votes compared to Berryhill’s 8,513.
In the race for Fifth District Congress, republican incumbent Steve King easily defeated democratic challenger Joyce Schulte.
Spirit Lake farmer Bill Northey was elected Iowa Secretary of Agriculture. With 99 percent of the precincts in, Northey had 51 percent of the vote, compared to Denise O’Brien’s 49 percent.
Democrat Chet Culver was elected Governor, receiving 54 percent of the statewide vote, while Jim Nussle had 45 percent; and Democrat Michael Mauro was the winner in the Secretary of State race, defeating MaryAnn Hanusa, a republican.
In Clay county, Linda Swanson, Ken Chalstrom and Burlin Matthews were elected to the board of supervisors. Seven people were running for three open seats.
For Clay County Treasurer, Sandra Geidl narrowly defeated Bill Zinn–Geidl had 2,729 votes while Zinn had 2,688.
Voters in Buena Vista county overwhelminly rejected a gambling referendum.
