(Spirit Lake)– There’s going to be a special audit of the city of Spirit Lake’s financial records.
The Spirit Lake City Council was informed Tuesday that a petition was filed with the State Auditor’s Office, calling for a state audit of the city’s financial records for the last fiscal year.
And one of the three new members on the council, Jerry Harbst, made a motion to have the special audit cover the last two years–not just the one.
The cost of a state audit wasn’t immediately known, but it’s though to be about 20-thousand dollars for each year.
Harbst said there’s nothing out of the ordinary that jumps out at him about the city’s finances for the past two years, but says it’s something a lot of people want to have done.
A motion to have a state audit done for the last two fiscal years passed four-to-one, with councilman Jeff Thee voting no. Thee said he wants to know a firm cost first.
The last time a state audit was conducted of Spirit Lake’s financial records was 1996.
The petition calling for the audit needed 50 signatures to be valid. It had 64.
