SL Council Hears Update On S. Hill Engineering; Approves Stoplight Study

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday heard an update on plans to re-build Hill Avenue South between 19th and 30th streets. Mark Cotter is with an engineering firm that’s been designing the project. He told the council that phase of the project is nearing completion. He says that will pave the way for another public meeting to further explain the project to adjoining property owners. The meeting will be held sometime in November. After that, Cotter says the project will go out for bid December 9th.

The Spirit Lake council also Tuesday approved the authorization of a traffic signal study on Highways nine and 71 where Representative Berkely Bedell Avenue is proposed to intersect the road west of the Great Lakes Mall. The study will cost about four thousand dollars.

The council approved an easement exchange with Ferguson Landscape to allow for the relocation of a storm sewer line. The line needs to be moved to make room for a new Ace Hardware store to be built in that area. Construction on the new store is tentatively set to start next week.

The council also approved a building permit that needed to meet the city’s architectural standards. It’s for a new commercial building being constructed just west of the Casey’s convenience store on Highways nine and 71. Owner John Brown told the council the building will house several establishments, including a “Mr. Movies” franchise scheduled to open January 29th.
