(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday adopted a revision to the city’s zoning ordinance pertaining to rental units in residential areas. It says any rental unit in a residential area for less than a month is classified as commercial. Previously, the classification affected only those that were rented for a month or more.
The council also approved an amendment to its policy on docks constructed at the end of right-of-ways. It allows for the underground extension of electricity to the docks for those who want to have that option.
In other business, December 9th at 5:30 p.m. was set as the date and time to approve plans and specifications for the South Hill Avenue Project. Another public meeting to hear concerns and answer questions about the project will be held either December 2nd or 4th.
They approved a changeorder adding 220-thousand dollars to the cost of the water plant improvement project. The additional work includes converting some storm water overflow runoffs so they’ll be able to hold effluent from the lime lagoons…allowing it an additional chance to settle out before going into the lake. It was reported the city has received an additional 176-thousand dollars in funding through a D-N-R revolving loan fund to help pay for the project. They’re hoping to get even more to help offset the added cost.
The council also set November 25th as the date for a public hearing to vacate Ithaca Avenue between Highways nine and 71 and 19th Street and convey the street to the county for the courthouse project.
And the council approved the appointment of Jeff Thee to represent the city on the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum Board. The seat is currently held by Terry Yarns…who owns the Okoboji Bagel Company, which is a tennant in the park. New bylaws approved by the board earlier this week prohibit tennants from serving on the Maritime Museum Board.
