(Spirit Lake)– A Sheldon man charged in connection with a 2005 motorcycle crash in Orleans that claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy was sentenced today (Monday) in Dickinson County District Court.
22-year-old Dustin Lockhorst pleaded guilty previously to a charge of involuntary manslaughter, an aggravated misdemeanor, in conjunction with the June 17th, 2005 crash that killed 13-year-old Anthony Voss of Sutherland. Voss was a passenger on the motorcycle Lockhorst was driving.
Judge Patrick Carr sentenced Lockhorst to the maximum of two years in prison. Fines for traffic tickets Lockhorst received in conjunction with the crash were suspended by Judge Carr, saying Lockhorst could better spend that money on his public obligations, including his children and their mother. However, Lockhorst was ordered to pay restitution of 10,968-dollars to the Crime Victims Assistance Fund, along with attorney’s fees and court costs to be determined.
Police say Lockhorst was driving the motorcycle northbound on 253rd Avenue on the southeast side of Big Spirit Lake when the bike left the road and struck a legally parked pickup.
Lockhorst was seriously injured in the crash. He has since recovered from his injuries.
