Sheldon Man Sentenced On Federal Firearms Charges

November 23, 2014

(Sioux City)– A Sheldon man has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison on firearms charges.

The charges against 22-year-old Shane Meyer stem from the October 8th 2002 shooting death of a young woman in Sheldon.

Prior to the sentencing, Meyer pleaded guilty to charges of making and aiding and abetting the making of three firearms which were not registered to him; knowingly receiving and possessing three firearms which were not registered to him; knowingly receiving and possessing three firearms after having been convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year; and knowingly receiving and possessing three firearms while being an unlawful user of controlled substances.

Meyer had previously been convicted of burglary in the third degree for breaking into a building at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake for stealing a computer.

Court documents say the firearms were stolen from the residence of Meyer’s father. They say Meyer and an accomplice, Lathan Barnett, sawed off the shotguns.
