(Pocahontas)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources now say 104-thousand fish were killed in a Pocahontas county creek as the result of a discharge of partially treated wastewater.
The fish kill in Lizard Creek was reported last Saturday. The D-N-R released its updated numbers Tuesday.
Officials say the fish kill took place along about a seven mile stretch of the creek.
D-N-R spokesman Kevin Baskins says the city of Pocahontas will be charged for the value of the fish, placed at 15,751-dollars. The 11-hundred dollar cost of investigating the spill could also be levied against the city, along with other penalties.
A state investigation concluded partially treated wastewater with high levels of ammonia was released into the creek while repairs were being made to Pocahontas’ sewage treatment facility.
