More Details Released In Highway 86 Chase

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Baloun has released additional information into Sunday evening’s high speed chase on Highway 86.

Baloun says the girls in the car that led authorities on the pursuit are 16 and 17-years-old and are walkaways from a youth detention center in Beresford, South Dakota.

The car they were in is believed to have been stolen from Worthington.

The pursuit started around 8:15 p.m. Sunday when a Lakefield police officer attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver refused to pull over and led authorities on a high speed chase that went southbound on Highway 86 at speeds in excess of 100 miles-per-hour at times.

The pursuit continued into Iowa where officers finally managed to stop the vehicle north of Vick’s Corner by using stop sticks.

Baloun says the driver was charged with careless driving while the passenger was cited as being a runaway. The two were transported to the Youth Emergency Services Center in Cherokee where Baloun says they’re being held pending extradition back to South Dakota.

A Milford Police Department squad car sustained minor damage in the incident after it went into a ditch, starting a small fire. It was quickly extinguished. The car was pulled out by a Sheriff’s Office pickup.

Authorities say the chase remains under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
