(Terril)– An issue that threatened a proposed whole-grade sharing agreement between the Terril and Graettinger school districts has been resolved.
Terril school board President Calvin Sawyer announced at a public hearing Tuesday evening the Graettinger school board has agreed to re-visit the mascot issue.
Controversy over a proposal to adopt the Pirates as the two school’s mascot erupted among many patrons of the Terril school district at a public hearing earlier this month. They wanted a mascot that neither school currently has.
Sawyer says the newly revised agreement will allow the student bodies to decide the mascot. He says Terril students have already been polled, and Graettinger students will be after the first of the year.
Sawyer says they’re greatful the Graettinger school board was willing to re-negotiate the issue.
Now that the mascot controversy has been taken care of, Sawyer says they can move toward signing the sharing agreement. He says both boards will do that at individual meetings January 7th.
Sawyer says the curriculum and teacher details will be finalized by spring.
Under the arrangement, high school students will attend classes in Graettinger with the middle school in Terril. Each district will still have its own elementary school.
Most athletics, including football, will also be shared by the two schools.
