Large Hail Batters Portions Of The Area

November 22, 2014

(Fairmont, Mn.)– Residents in portions of the KUOO listening area were awakened early this (Wednesday) morning to the sound of large hail pounding down.

The National Weather Service says it received numerous reports of large hail from Martin county, Minnesota between 1:45 and 2:00 a.m.

Hail measuring three-quarters-of-an-inch in diameter was reported by law enforcement in the town of Welcome at 1:45 a.m.; hail stones measuring nearly two inches of diameter pummeled Fairmont a short time later…at about 2:00 a.m. That report was also received from law enforcement officials.

There was no immediate word on the extent of damage.

The hail storm was associated with severe thunderstorms that accompanied a strong cold front that moved through the region. The front will bring much cooler temperatures the next couple of days…in place of the 80’s and 90’s we’ve experienced the last several days.

Several record high temperatures were established in the region Tuesday when temperatures soared into the low 90’s…making it feel more like July than October. Tuesday’s high temperature in Spirit Lake topped out at 90 degrees. The high temperature in Spencer was 92…breaking a record that stood since 1938.
