Lakes Area Delegation Heads To Des Moines To Lobby Water Quality Issues

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Representatives from various protective associations from the Iowa Great Lakes will be headed to the statehouse Tuesday.

The delegation is being headed up by Steve Anderson of the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum. He tells KUOO news they’ll be urging lawmakers to pass several important bills dealing with water quality.

Anderson says one of those would allow for fines to be levied against anyone found to have transported an invasive aquatic specie to a body of water. Currently, the fine only pertains to anyone caught bringing in Eurasian Water Milfoil. Anderson says that would be extended to include things such as zebra muscles, loose strife, and several other invasive species of plants and animals.

In addition to that, Anderson says they’ll lobby lawmakers to increase funding for the Iowa’s Evironment First Fund.

Anderson says the group will return late Wednesday.
