E-Mail Scam Makes The Rounds

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– If you get an e-mail from someone claiming to be with the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission (FDIC), beware.

Larry Schaefer of First Bank and Trust in Spirit Lake tells KUOO news it’s the latest attempt by scam artists to get your personal information.

Schaefer says the e-mail informs the recipient the Department of Homeland Security has advised the FDIC to suspend all deposit insurance on the recipient’s bank account due to suspected violations of the USA Patriot Act. The e-mail infers that deposit insurance will be suspended until personal identity, including bank account information, can be verified.

Schaefer says it’s a scam. He says the FDIC has taken NO such action and has sent no such e-mails. Schaefer says under no such circumstances should you provide any personal information upon receiving such an e-mail.

Those receiving such an e-mail are asked to report it by contacting the FDIC by e-mail at alert@fdic.gov.
