(Algona)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says several factors combined to cause a large fish kill along the Des Moines River in the Algona area.
D-N-R officials say they have no way to tell just how many fish were killed, but they say it was a significant number.
A wide variety of dead fish have been found, including Walleye, carp, crappie, red horse, channel catfish, and others.
Fisheries biologists say low water levels combined with a thick cover of snow and ice to produce very low levels of dissolved oxygen in the river.
Most of the fish have been found along an eight mile stretch of the Des Moines River north of Algona.
