(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county voters Tuesday soundly rejected a gaming referendum for a riverboat casino on one of the Iowa Great Lakes.
A whopping 72 percent voted against the measure. Only 28 percent were in favor. The vote totals were 5,092 no compared to just 1,939 yes.
Voter turnout was 55 percent.
The measure was defeated in all 10 precincts in Dickinson county.
Mike May, an opponent to the gaming issue, told KUOO news the vote sends a clear message that people enjoy and want to maintain the quality of life that already exists in the Iowa Great Lakes.
Darwin Pike, a supporter, was obviously disappointed in the outcome, saying it was an opportunity they atleast tried for.
The 72 percent disapproval rating in Dickinson county compares with a 72 percent approval rating in Palo Alto county and nearly that same approval rate in Wright county.
