Dickinson Co. P & Z Approve Drive-In Theatre Re-zoning Recommendation

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– With two members absent, the Dickinson County Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously Monday to recommend the board of supervisors approve rezoning some land west of Superior for a drive-in theatre.

It involves rezoning about 10 acres of land in section 33 of Superior Township from Agricultural to Highway Commercial. The site is near the Jackson “Y”, or the junction of Highways nine and 71 west of Superior.

Gaylord of Kemp Enterprise of Alpha, Minnesota is at the helm of the proposed project. He told P & Z members it’s an ideal location to draw people not only from the lakes area, but also places like Estherville and Jackson.

A stipulation attached to the motion calls for Kemp to include provisions in his plans to address drainage…something a neighboring landowner was concerned about.

Monday’s action by the P & Z was one of several hurdles that needed to be cleared. Not only do the board of supervisors need to act on the P & Z’s decision, but Kemp will also have to appear before the county’s Board of Adjustment for a conditional use permit for an outdoor entertainment classification.
