City And School Elections Being Held Today, Tues., Nov. 2nd, Across Iowa

November 02, 2021 Steve Schwaller

***REVISED TO CORRECT THE FACT THERE IS A CONTESTED RACE FOR MAYOR IN WEST OKOBOJI***

(Des Moines, IA)  —  Today (Tuesday) is the final day for Iowa voters to cast their ballots in city and school board elections.  Polls open at 7:00 a-m and will remain open until 8:00 p-m for in-person voting.  Eight p-m is also the deadline for returning an absentee ballot.  Registered voters must bring an accepted I-D.  You can also register to vote at your polling location on Election Day with proof of residence or that I-D.

Voters in two precincts in Dickinson county will find themselves voting at different locations this election. The polling site for those living in Arnolds Park and Okoboji has been moved to the Pavilion in Arnolds Park. The polling site for residents of Wahpeton has been moved to the Milford Community Center due to construction work.

There are some contested races in today’s (Tues.) city elections in Dickinson county that we’ll be following.

In Milford, the seat for Mayor will need to be filled by write-in votes. Incumbent Steve Anderson didn’t file for re-election and no one else filed. Anderson did tell KUOO news in a recent interview he would accept if he would receive the majority of write-in votes.

In Okoboji, four people are running for three city council seats. They include incumbents Julie Andres and Walter Mendenhall along with Dan Sanders and Kae Hoppe. Longtime councilman Jerry Robinson isn’t seeking re-election.

Another city council race is in Orleans where Keith Ostrum, Eric Anderson, Benjamin Radcliffe and Stanley Gable are running for three open seats.

There’s also a city council race in Superior where Michael Smith, Jacob Hathcock-Shetler, Mark Campbell and Debra Coleman are seeking three open seats.

In Terril, there’s a three-way race for two open city council seats, with Jeri Nissen, Austin Fairchild and Scot Matthews on the ballot.

Four people are running for two city council seats in West Okoboji, including Mike Paxton, Darlene Powers, Kristopher Kneen and Robert Hein. There is also a race for Mayor between incumbent Barb Lynch and Craig Miner.

In Spirit Lake, two incumbents who’s seats are on today’s (Tues.) ballot aren’t seeking re-election. John Chappas and Angela Kofoot are running for those two seats.

There’s just one contested school board race in Dickinson county in today’s (Tues.) election. That’s for the district 4 seat in the Harris-Lake Park School District where Jeffrey Jacobsma and Lisa Carstensen are squaring off.
