Bid On Arnolds Park Project Comes In $180,000 Higher Than Expected

November 23, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Construction of a decorative retaining wall adjacent to the Okoboji Cemetary in Arnolds Park and relocation of the city’s war memorial are going to be delayed a bit.

The Arnolds Park city council met in a special session late Thursday afternoon to award a bid on the project. Instead, they wound up deferring action on the only bid that was received…which was 180-thousand dollars over the engineer’s estimate.

The bid, submitted by Mark’s Landscaping Service of Granville, Iowa, came in at 483-thousand dollars. The engineer’s estimate was 365-thousand.

City Administrator Ron Walker says the firm will review the bid to make sure its numbers are correct. He says they’ll report back early next week. Following that, Walker says the council will have to consider its options, which would include scrapping the bid and going out for new ones.

Walker says the whole situation means the project will be delayed, but he’s still optimistic it could get done yet by the time the snow flies.

The council also Thursday approved a Finance Committee recommendation of a three percent across-the-board pay increase for city employees; and they voted unanimously NOT to spray for mosquitoes this summer.
