(Arnolds Park)– The Arnolds Park city council Wednesday awarded a bid on the reconstruction of Rohr Street and Forest Park Road in the amount of 58,649-dollars from Rohlin Construction of Spencer.
The council took the action following a public hearing on the special assessment project, which drew no comments.
The council formally denied a request from Fred Davenport to reconstruct a deck that partially extends over city right-of-way; and they heard from Kate Whitrock, Director of the Humane Society of Northwest Iowa. Whitrock told the council the fee charged to the city for impounding stray animals will be going up in the next year…from 100 dollars a month currently to 200. Whitrock says it’s the first increase since the city first contracted with the Humane Society in 1997. She says it’s needed to meet increased expenses at the shelter. To help offset that, Whitrock says the Humane Society will start paying euthenasia fees for the city. The council decided to go along with the increase, and will look at increasing fees the city collects from pet owners whose animals are impounded.
The council approved a motion allowing a contractor on the Highway 71 Streetscape project to leave some banding at the corner of Highway 71 and Lake Street instead of ripping it out and re-doing it. That part of the project cost will be withheld from the contractor’s payment. Engineers on the project say the banding wasn’t done properly.
The council also signed off on plans to replace the Trigg’s or Hinshaw Bridge. Plans call for a new bridge with a 150 foot span, 32 feet wide. Those plans have drawn concern from the county board of supervisors, who feel the travelled portion of the bridge should be wider.
