(Estherville)– The search for a man with dementia who wandered off Saturday in Estherville ended on a positive note.
Estherville police say they received a report around 8:40 am Saturday that the man had left his home on foot and couldn’t be located. Police met with family members to get a description and a missing person advisory was put out. A search got underway in some neighborhoods in the area of North 9th Street in Estherville, as well as some surrounding fields and woods. Two drones were also deployed. A number of residences and outbuildings were also searched.
At about 12:20 pm a crew searching a ravine near West North 6th Street and West 6th Avenue North spotted the top of someone’s head. That’s where they found the 67-year-old man who had fallen into a large washout. He was retrieved from the scene and was examined by EMS crews. Authorities say he was uninjured but tired.
Emmet County Emergency Management, the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Estherville Fire and Estherville Ambulance assisted on the scene. Police Chief Brent Shatto thanks the responding agencies and the public for their assistance. He says many residents checked their surveillance cameras during the search.
Shatto also thanks residents for their cooperation in areas where search teams were entering and clearing properties.
