Spirit Lake School Board Adopts Policy For Mobility Devices Such As E-Bikes, Scooters & Skateboards

August 11, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– The operation of mobility devices on the grounds of the Spirit Lake Community Schools will no longer be allowed as the result of action taken Monday evening by the school board.

Angela Olsen, Director of Learning and Development, told the board E-bikes, scooters and skateboards are included in the new policy that will require them to be walked when on school grounds…

“That includes the sidewalks, parking lots. We’re very nervous that the kids dart through the back parking lot and we have high school drivers and they’re in and out of cars and they’re not following the flow of traffic. We’re just nervous for not just the student on the E-scooter or the E-bike, but also our student drivers or even adult drivers that are in the parking lots. So that’s a district thing that we are just asking for cooperation from our students and parents on supporting that initiative to keep people safe.”

Olsen says some correspondence will be sent to parents regarding the matter.
