(Spirit Lake)– A fundraising effort by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation to preserve Angler’s Bay on the northeast side of Big Spirit Lake has reached a new milestone.
Officials say more than 500 donors have contributed toward the 6.67 million dollar project, leaving 450-thousand dollars left to raise.
The project is the most expensive ever undertaken by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. It will protect two-thirds of-a-mile of shoreline along Big Spirit Lake, including a bulrush bed that provides fish and wildlife habitat.
Once all the funds have been raised, the site will be owned and managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and will be open to the public.
