(Spirit Lake)– Meeting in special session today (Monday), the Spirit Lake city council directed the city’s Administrative Committee to oversee the process of hiring a new City Administrator, replacing Pete Hegeman who will be retiring at the end of September.
Councilman Steve Balm also serves on the Administrative Committee. He says while the committee will be spearheading the effort, that the full city council will still have plenty of input and will have the final say over who’s hired.
Balm says they plan to start advertising soon. He hopes they can have a new City Administrator hired by November 1st.
Pete Hegeman, who’s held the position 28 years, retires September 29th. What to do in the interim with no one in that position was also discussed, including the possibility of appointing an Assistant City Clerk. No official action was taken on that matter.
Balm says the committee has already established several qualifications they’ll be looking for in a new City Administrator. They include someone with strong management skills; someone with a strong financial background with experience in Tax Increment Financing and someone with public relations skills.
