EPA Official Doesn’t Expect Significant Environmental Impact From Sunday’s Derailment Near Sibley

May 20, 2021

(Sibley)– Officials say Sunday’s train derailment on the south edge of Sibley should have very minimal impacts on the environment, if any at all. Officials with Union Pacific Railroad say the train was carrying hydrochloric acid, potassium hydroxide and asphalt.

Andrew Gieseke, an on site coordinator with the Environmental Protection Agency, tells news partner KTIV booms were deployed shortly after the incident to contain anything that may have gotten into nearby Otter Creek. He says remediation efforts continue on the soil surrounding the site of the derailment…Andrew Gieseke

“They’ll be remediating it by neutralizing the acids and then they’ll remove them for disposal. Any soils that remain impacted will be sampled and will be cleaned up in remediation efforts.”

Most of the wreckage from the derailment has now been removed from the site and crews have been repairing and rebuilding the track.
