(Albert City)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a manure spill near Albert City.
DNR representatives say they met Sunday with the owner of a hog operation near Albert City regarding a manure release from an above ground storage tank. Officials say a valve failed resulting in the release of an unknown amount of manure that pooled near the tank and ran into a grassy waterway.
DNR staff reported finding a few dead fish along with manure and elevated ammonia levels along a four mile stretch of a tributary of the North Raccoon River.
Upon further investigation DNR officials determined the source of the manure was from the hog operation and that it was coming through some underground tile lines.
The agency says it’s working the owner of the operation to get it cleaned up and will consider appropriate enforcement action.
