(Undated)– Five northwest Iowa Kiwanis Clubs have once again joined together for a project ensuring every local student starts the school year with dignity, confidence and the essentials they need to succeed.
The Hygiene Backpack Project involves clubs from Emmetsburg, Estherville, Milford, Spencer and Spirit Lake. One club purchases the backpacks while the others supply everything from shampoo and deodorant to toothbrushes, wash cloths and other hygiene products.
Around 55 Kiwanians gathered this year to prepare 400 fully stocked backpacks. The clubs partnered with Upper Des Moines Opportunity’s regional hubs in Clay, Dickinson, Emmet and Palo Alto counties to ensure the resources get to the students who need them most just in time for the start of the school year.
The project has been going on for more than 15 years.
