Office Of Consumer Advocate Says If At All Possible, Those Negatively Impacted By COVID-19 Should Still Try To Keep Up On Utility Bills, Even Though A Shut-Off Moratorium Is In Place For Now

April 14, 2020

(Des Moines)–Officials with the Iowa Office of Consumer Advocate say you should continue to pay your utility bills or atleast a portion of them if at all possible, even though residents impacted by COVID-19 can get relief. An emergency order issued March 27th by the Iowa Utilities Board implemented a moratorium on the disconnection of electric and natural gas service for nonpayment of bills.

The Iowa Office of Consumer Advocate says if at all possible payments should continue to be made to avoid large unpaid balances and potential shutoffs after the public health emergency ends.

The agency adds customers experiencing financial difficulty should contact their utility service provider now to explore payment options and assistance programs.
