Iowa Lakes Community College to host Annual Jazz Band Contest January 23-24

(Estherville)-Hundreds of area students will participate in the Jazz Band Contest at Iowa Lakes Community College this week. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

Iowa Lakes Community College to host Annual Jazz Band Contest January 23-24 

Iowa Lakes Community College will host their annual High School Jazz Band Contest on Thursday and Friday.

Instrumental Music Professor Carol Ayres says hundreds of area students will compete at the contest.  “On Thursday, we have the 4A and 3A schools, and on Friday, the 2A schools.  There’s about 25-30 kids a band, so we figure several hundred each day.  We have 3 professional clinician judges coming, and they will listen bands and they will give them audio comments on a digital recorder and they will give them written comments, and then they’ll go up and work with the bands after they’re done playing and try to help them for the jazz contests to come.”

She notes that the performances are free and open to the public.  “You can come and go for no cost.  Most places cost anywhere from $8 to $15 to get in and see your band, but Iowa Lakes is still doing it as a free service to our community.”

The annual Jazz Band Contest will be held January 23rd & 24th in the Gym on the Estherville Campus.
