Iowa A-G Calling On Legislature To Take Action After Getting Complaints From Owners Of Manufactured Homes

January 21, 2020

(Des Moines)– Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller is calling on the Legislature to take action after getting complaints from owners of manufactured homes on a number of fronts. Miller says the complaints include significant rent increases, utility fees, arbitrary fees and fines, lack of clear title and being forced to move for no reason and then losing their homes.

The A-G’s Office says the complaints have increased as out-of-state corporations have purchased manufactured-home parks in several communities and drastically increased rent and fees.

The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division worked with lawmakers last session to propose new protections but the bills stalled.

Among other things, Miller is calling on lawmakers to limit rent increases to once a year and set a cap on the percentage increase in annual rent. He also wants requirements spelled out under which leases can be terminated.
