Dateline NBC Program To Feature Cold Case That Has A Local Tie To It

January 10, 2020

(West Liberty)– Dateline NBC will air a two-hour long program on January 17th regarding the 1992 cold case murder of Corey Wieneke of West Liberty, Iowa. Wieneke was found bludgeoned to death in his rural home in 1992. For 27 years, no one was charged in his death.

In 2018, a friend of Corey’s, Annette Cahill, was charged with first degree murder after a woman came forward and said she heard Cahill tearfully confess to the murder in late 1992, when the witness was then nine-years-old. Cahill was convicted of second degree murder in September of 2019, at her second trial, although her attorney argued there was no physical evidence linking her to the scene of the crime. She has appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court, which is ongoing.

Cahill was represented by attorneys Clemens Erdahl and Elizabeth Araguas. After Erdahl’s sudden death this past October, she is now solely represented by Araguas, who is a 2007 graduate of Spirit Lake High School (pictured in photo).
