Lakes Area Game Fest to be held January 4 & 5 in Okoboji

January 02, 2020

(Okoboji)-A Board Gaming convention will be held in the Iowa Great Lakes this weekend, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

Lakes Area Games Fest to be held January 4 & 5 in Okoboji

The Lakes Area Board Gamers will host the Lakes Area Game Fest at Arrowwood Resort on Saturday and Sunday.

Co-Founder Joe Weber says the group is fairly new.   “We formed our group about a year and a half ago to basically just promote the hobby of modern board gaming, and we have met so many people over the course of a year or two who have really enjoyed the hobby that we wanted to continue to promote it and allow it to grow because we found it’s difficult for people to understand how many other board gamers are out there.  We decided to create a group that would have regular meet-ups and promote an annual convention that would help people to get into the hobby and enjoy it, and help people that are already involved in it to meet others and have activities to help them enjoy it, as well.”

He adds that a portion of the proceeds will go to local charities.  “The goal isn’t to create a profit.  It’s basically just to create an opportunity within the community for people to get out and do something fun and enjoy a fun weekend, just to create a sustainable event, something that we can continue to operate each year.  So, a big part of our mission is to contribute to local organizations, non-profits and charities, and this year we’ll be contributing 25 percent of our proceeds towards those organizations.”

The convention is open to the public, however space is limited.
