(Orleans)– The Okoboji Foundation recently presented a check for $24,000 to the Iowa Department Of Natural Resources to help fund a water quality improvement project at the Spirit Lake Fish Hatchery. It allows fish feed and fish waste time to settle in the ponds, prior to the water going into the lake. 12-inch discharge pipes were replaced, along with outdated equipment. Officials say it will reduce the amount of phosphorous from the hatchery by up to 70 percent. The project was recently completed.
Okoboji Foundation board chairman Dr. Pat O’Brien presented the check to Kim Hawkins of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The grant was awarded in 2018.
