(Spencer)– A major upgrade is in the works for Abben Cancer Center.
The Spencer Hospital Board of Trustees today (Thurs.) approved a $4 million equipment upgrade which includes a new linear accelerator for radiation treatment and a new electronic health record system. The project is scheduled for completion in early August 2020.
Officials say the current accelerator was installed about 10 years ago. They say the new equipment will allow them to utilize digital-based technology along with improved patient positioning and greater precision in targeting cancerous cells.
They say the new medical record system is compatible with that used by Avera Oncology, ensuring seamless care coordination between Abben and Avera.
Officials say the project will also include some minor renovation at the cancer center which is expected to start yet this calendar year.
