(Undated)– Area law enforcement agencies are sounding the alarm on yet another new scam that’s making the rounds.
This one involves a letter being sent through the mail stating that the recipient has been selected to participate in a secret shopper program as part of a project to evaluate customer service. It calls on the recipient to purchase gift cards from several Wal-Mart stores using money from a check attached to the letter. The recipient of the letter is then told to take pictures of those gift cards and to either text or email those pictures to a certain number or email address. Officials say the scammers then use those photos to remove the funds from the cards. In addition, they say the check that’s attached to the letter is fraudulent.
Authorities say if you get such a letter you should immediately get rid of it.
