Another Pharmacy Announces It’s Pulling Zantac From Its Shelves

October 03, 2019

(Sioux Falls, S.D.)– Another pharmacy with ties to the region has announced it’s pulling the heartburn medication Zantac from its shelves. Lewis Drug made the announcement Thursday.

Officials with the pharmacy chain say it also includes generic and private label products containing ranitidine, which has been found to contain a trace amount of a possible cancer-causing substance. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not called for people to stop taking the medication that they may have at home or that remains on the market. But the FDA has advised patients who which to stop taking ranitidine to talk to their doctors or pharmacists about alternatives for the heartburn medication.

Hy-Vee announced earlier this week it was also pulling products containing the substance from its store shelves.
