(Spencer)-The Red Cross is holding several blood drives in Northwest Iowa over the next few days, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has the story:
The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood with several blood drives scheduled in the region over the next few days.
Communications Manager Sue Thesenga explains. “The need for blood is constant. Blood is a perishable product and only has a shelf life of 42 days, so it’s so important that we constantly replenish that. Right now, we are urging donors of all blood types to give blood, and help support cancer patients, organ transplant and other patients. Type O blood is very important and urgently needed right now, and it’s so important for us to have Type O on the shelves for ongoing patient care in emergencies. Type O Negative is the universal blood type, and that’s what emergency room personnel reach for when there’s no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations.”
She notes that appointments are recommended. “We really encourage people to download our free Red Cross Blood Donor app right on their cell phone, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS to make an appointment.”
