Midwest Economy Posted Growth In January

February 02, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Omaha, NE)– A monthly survey of Midwest business leaders shows more growth in January. Creighton University Economics Professor Ernie Goss…

“The overall reading was up slightly, it’s up to 50.9. That’s from December’s 50.3. I won’t say that’s great news, but it’s better news than I was expecting.”

Goss says says while January’s Mid-America Business Conditions Index shows continued growth from December, there is also some pessimism…

“Only 9.1 percent of the manufacturing supply managers expect the economy to expand in that six months.”

Goss says there are some warning signs for the regional economy in 2024…

“Residential real estate, I expect some problems there. House prices have got to come down. Commercial real estate likewise. We’ve got too much re-financing going on in the commercial real estate, so we’ll see some problems there.”

Goss says just over nine percent of business managers they surveyed expect growth in the next six months. The survey was conducted in a number of states in the region, including Iowa and Minnesota.
