(Spencer)– With a flood watch in effect for the region, the city of Spencer announced late today (Thursday) it is activating “a level 1 response” under the city’s Flood Response Plan, effective immediately.
City officials say the proactive measure is being taken as a result of recent heavy rainfall in the headwaters of the Ocheyedan and Little Sioux Rivers, with the flows moving downstream toward the Spencer area.
Based on conditions as of late Thursday afternoon, officials say the most likely crest of the Little Sioux River at the Grand Avenue Bridge is about 12 feet early next week, July 5th-7th. As of late today (Thurs.), the river level at the Grand Avenue Bridge was 7 feet.
City Manager Kevin Robinson says the level 1 activation is primarily a preparatory step.
