(Undated)– We’re getting a jumpstart on pothole season.
The Iowa Department of Transportation says the big swings in temperatures over the past couple of weeks along with ample moisture are starting to cause issues. Officials say the moisture gets into or underneath the pavement and the freezing and thawing causes the pavement to shift, buckle or break. Vehicles passing over those weak areas then cause the dreaded pothole to form.
Crews use what’s known as a “cold-mix” asphalt to make temporary repairs until the weather warms up enough to put in a more permanent patch.
