Dickinson County Supervisors Adopt Resolution Supporting Trail Grant Application

January 16, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The remaining 2.5-mile segment of Tatanka Ska Trace trail that will connect Lake Park to the Lakes area has been awarded a $200,000 Community Attraction and Tourism, or CAT Grant. It is currently in the construction phase with a completion date of July 26, 2024. Trails Director Erin Reed informed the supervisors of the grant award at their meeting this (Tues.) morning. Now, she says they’ll apply for another grant through the state’s Destination Iowa program for a trail connecting Dickinson county to Clay county…

“There’s six and-a-half million dollars available. Like they do with the Iowa Economic Development, they want to see communities participate as far as putting dollars towards these projects. And working with Milford, they’re putting together some numbers for adding trail going along Highway 71 as part of this project.”

Reed says she’ll be meeting with the Milford City Council next week to discuss details of that. She adds, however, the award of the CAT Grant could make it more difficult for the county to land the roughly $900,000 Destination Iowa Grant…

“I don’t know how that will work against us, but I’m not going to give up the opportunity to go after $900,000 which is about what we’d be looking at. This project would go after all three phases, or this grant would go after all three phases, so for the full four and-a-half miles to get to Clay county line and then that way we can ask for more and put up more for a bigger project, but it speaks more volume for the Destination Iowa program.”

The county will need to provide $155,000 in matching funds if the Destination Iowa Grant is awarded. The Supervisors today (Tues.) unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the grant application.
