Dickinson County Supervisors Take No Action On Water Quality Commission Funding Request

December 28, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors Wednesday deferred action on a funding request from the Dickinson County Water Quality Commission. The amount being requested from the county under an updated 28E agreement is being increased by about six percent over the current level. Supervisor Tim Fairchild expressed concern over uncertainties that still exist for budgeting in the upcoming fiscal year…

“Normally this time of year I know pretty close where we’re going to be. We don’t have a clue, really. I do want to fund the staff and I’m glad we did that last week, but I don’t know where we’re going to be for sure.”

Supervisor Chairman Bill Leupold echoed the concern…

“That’s my feeling, is that I want to know where we’re at before we start pledging money. I do like the program, I think you know that. I’m very much in favor of water quality. It’s a huge economic factor in our county, but we gotta see where we’re at.”

The commission funds grants for projects that improve and protect water quality. The new agreement would also include a special fund designated for emergency treatment of any new infestations of aquatic invasive species, such as eurasian watermilfoil.
