Okoboji Officials Say Speed Radar Sign Is Having Desired Results

December 13, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– Officials in Okoboji say they’re pleased with the results of a sign that tells you how fast you’re going and if you’re over the speed limit. The sign is located on Stakeout Road near Chalstrom Beach, a short distance from the Dickinson County Trail crossing near McDonalds. Okoboji Police Chief Jason Peterson says they’ve been able to pull data from the sign…

“82 percent of vehicles going past that location were exceeding the 25 mph speed limit, with 12 percent of those exceeding it by more than 10 mph. And then on Memorial Day it was switched to the mode where people can see their speed and we saw a decrease in speed of more than 10 percent and an average speed of cars going by there of 27 mph. Data was then again pulled a couple months later in the middle of July and we saw that that post Memorial Day speed was being maintained and the average speed was at 27 mph which is just two miles-per-hour over the speed limit. It’s still speeding but it’s just two miles-per-hour over.”

The city installed the sign this past summer after a pedestrian was struck and seriously injured a couple of years ago at the trail crossing.
