(Spirit Lake)– You can expect to see an increased presence of law enforcement on the roads over the upcoming St. Patrick’s holiday.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety says state and local officers will be focusing on seatbelt usage and impaired driving as part of their yearlong campaign to reduce traffic fatalities in the state. It’s been dubbed “Drive Safe Iowa: The Power Is In Your Hands”.
Task Force Chair and Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Chief Patrick Hoye says the ultimate goal is for zero fatalities, but he says the incremental goal for 2021 is 300, which would be down from 338 in 2020.
Authorities say in Iowa, March 17th is typically one of the biggest drinking nights of the year. They say that in 2019, there were two crashes over the St. Patrick’s holiday that killed four people.
