Worthington Man Pleads Guilty TO Federal Firearms Charge

February 15, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Sioux City)– A Worthington man has pleaded guilty to a federal firearms charge. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 36-year-old Michael Hangman entered the plea last week to a charge of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Hangman admitted at a plea hearing to possessing a 12-gauge shotgun while being an unlawful user of marijuana and having prior felony convictions. The charge stemmed from a pursuit reaching speeds of 120 mph that began in Minnesota and ended in Iowa. Officers recovered marijuana, a digital scale with meth residue on it and baggies from the vehicle. Authorities say the shotgun had been modified and spray painted black. They add Hangman was prohibited from possessing firearms due to drug use and prior felony convictions in Minnesota for terroristic threats-reckless disregard and for storing methamphetamine in the presence of a child or vulnerable adult.

Hangman remains in the custody of a U.S. Marshal pending sentencing. He faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
