(Des Moines)– Thursday marked the anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters in Iowa history. Heavy snows in early 1993 followed by summer rainstorms prompted flooding to begin that July 9th.
The flooding caused severe damage in the Iowa Great Lakes, and resulted in some big changes being made to infrastructure. The National Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had a heavy presence in the area and oversaw the operation of emergency operations. It led to the installation of additional culverts being installed at the Spillway on the south side of Big Spirit Lake and at the outlet below Lower Gar. The culverts at that location have now been removed and replaced with a bridge.
