Sanborn Man To Make A Plea On Drug Charges

July 10, 2026

(Primghar)– A plea deal appears to have been reached with a Sanborn man who was arrested last year on multiple drug charges in O’Brien county.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, 29-year-old Hunter Koontz of Sanborn is accused of selling methamphetamine to confidential informants on several occasions in 2025. Deputies say some of the sales took place near schools, parks, and the city’s swimming pool.

Koontz originally faced four counts of drug trafficking, each a Class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison. He also faced three counts of drug tax stamp violations, Class D felonies that each carried a possible five-year sentence.

Court records indicate a “plea taking and sentencing” is set in the case for Monday, July 27th, 2026. A jury trial had been set to take place in August.
