Watch Lost During WW1 Returned To Veteran’s Grandsons

November 22, 2014

(Sioux City)– A watch that was lost for nearly 90 years is back with the family of its owner–a World War One veteran.

The watch belonged to the family of William Gill of SIoux City. He lost it in France. Carl Grothause of South Dakota won the watch, which was engraved with Gill’s name and hometown, in a poker game.

He brought it back to South Dakota. He tried to find Gill, but failed.

His son, Dewey Grothaus of Spirit Lake, also tried to find Gill after his father died in 1991.

A conversation led to a genealogist, Peggy Powell of Hornick, who found records of William Gill’s death in Omaha, Nebraska. That led her to his grandson, Lloyd Gill in Missouri. The watch was given to Lloyd and his brother, Bill, during a ceremony Wednesday at the American Legion in Sioux City.
