Voters In Spencer School District Soundly Defeat Levy

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– The Spencer school district’s financial headaches won’t be getting better anytime soon. If anything, they may have just gotten worse.

Voters overwhelmingly rejected an Instructional Support Levy in a special election Tuesday. Only 637 people voted in favor…or 32 percent…compared to 1,380 no…or 68 percent. About 22 percent of the eligible voters turned out Tuesday.

Superintendent Greg Ebeling was hopeful the measure would pass, saying it would have helped offset financial losses caused by state budget cuts and declining enrollment.

Opposition to the measure was mounting in the days leading up to Tuesday’s election. Those opposed said they were concerned over the possibility of taxes going up even more after voters in the Spencer School District recently approved a bond issue for a new Middle School.
