Turf Grass Plot Shows More Fertilizer Isn’t Always Better

November 23, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– When it comes to maintaining a healthy, green lawn, more fertilizer isn’t always better. That’s the finding of a turf grass fertilizer plot on display on the east side of the green space area just east of the Arnolds Park Amusement Park.

The plot was established in the past year as a joint venture by the Iowa Great Lakes Cleanwater Alliance and the Iowa State University Extension Service. The plot was evenly divided and each portion given a different volume of fertilizer. The plot that had the lowest concentration was just as green as the ones with the higher levels of fertilizer.

Eldon Everhart, a horticulturist with the I-S-U Extension Service, says the demonstration shows you can have a healthy lawn while being environmentally friendly.

The plot is one of three in Iowa. Similar ones are located in Rock Valley and Sioux City.

The plots were made possible through an Environmental Protection Agency Grant. Officials hope they can renew the funding to keep the plots going for another couple of years.
